A fibre optic splitter (also called a splitter) is a fibre optic convergence device that couples, branches and distributes optical signals in an optical network system.

A splitter is one of the most important passive devices in a fibre optic link, with multiple inputs and multiple outputs, a splitter has M inputs and N outputs, expressed as M*N, according to the different production processes, divided into planar waveguide type fibre optic splitter (PLC splitter) and fused pull cone splitter (FBT Splitter)

The role of the splitter is to distribute downstream data and concentrate upstream data. An optical splitter distributes the transmitted optical signal from one fibre to several fibres. There are various forms of distribution, 1 x 2, 1 x 4, 1 x N, or 2 x 4, M x N. The general architecture of FTTH is: OLT (server room bureau end) - ODN (passive optical network distribution system) - ONU (user end), where the optical splitter is used in the ODN to enable multiple end users to share a PON interface. In the PON structure, when the distribution of buildings is scattered and irregular, such as the distribution of villas, the distance between them and the low density of users, the use of centralised splitting can make full use of resources and cover the surrounding area.
