The battle between CWDM and DWDM: which is friendlier to MAN?

As is known to all, CWDM and DWMD are closely related, both of which adopt WDM technology and can simultaneously transmit multiple optical wave lengths in a single fiber. However, CWDM is suitable for short distance transmission, while DWDM is suitable for long distance transmission. In addition, there is also a big difference in power consumption and cost.

Power consumption

The cost

The cost difference between CWDM and DWDM systems is mainly reflected in hardware and operating costs.

With the increase of the total number of wavelength multiplexed and the increase of single channel transmission rate, power consumption becomes a key factor in the circuit board design of the system. Compared with DWDM system, CWDM system without refrigerated laser has low power consumption and can effectively save cost.

Although DWDM and CWDM are using DFB laser as light source, but the DWDM to prevent wavelength drift caused by temperature changes to the filter channel multiplexer and demultiplexer, need to use cooling technology (that is, the cooler) to control the temperature change and stable wavelength, sometimes, also can use wavelength lock to ensure the accuracy of wavelength and stability, and CWDM don’t need cooling, such as wavelength locking technology, greatly reduces the cost of equipment, the current CWDM system costs usually only 30% of the cost of DWDM system.

By above knowable, CWDM technology and DWDM technology has the same principle, relative to the latter and the former has the advantages of low cost, low power consumption, etc. As a result, the CWDM technology construction of metropolitan area network or the network capacity is one of the most effective and the most economic choice can greatly reduce network cost, adapt to constantly enrich and increase of the business, to solve the problem of the ratio of the expansion and metropolitan area network construction.
